Mysore has been the home of traditional industries like Mysore silk weaving, sandalwood carving, bronze work and the production of lime and salt. The planned industrial growth of the city and the state was first envisaged in the Mysore economic conference, held in 1911. This led to the establishment of few big industries in Mysore city like the Mysore Sandalwood Oil Factory in 1917 and the Sri Krishnarajendra Mills in 1920.
In recent years, Mysore has emerged as the hub of the tourism industry in Karnataka, attracting about 3 million tourists. Mysore occupies first place on itinerary of any traveler visiting South India. Mysore has the very best of secondary facilities like:

Agriculture occupies an important place in district economy as it provides employment to the large group of rural people. The agriculture sector constitutes around 20% to district GDP. Irrigated area constitutes to around 22% mainly through Canals, tanks, wells, borewells and lift irrigation.
Inustrial sector is also playing an important role, most of the major industries are located in and around Mysore taluk and Nanjagud taluk, Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) has established six industrial areas in and around Mysore. These are located at Belagola, Belawadi, Hebbal (Electronic City), Hootagalli, Nanjangud, Thandya. Some of the major industries located in Mysore are BEML, J. K. Tyres, Wipro, Falcon Tyres, L & T, Infosys, TVS, Cadburys etc.,

Mysore is growing to be the Next IT hub after Bangalore. Infosys has established one of the largest technical training centres in the world and Wipro has established its Global Service Management Center (GSMC) at Mysore. Also, in the area of Bio-Technology Mysore is emerging as an important player in the Indian Senario with around 13 companies situated here.
